What3words: The App That Could Save a Life

In an emergency, location matters. A lot.

One of the biggest challenges emergency services face is finding exactly where someone is, especially if they’re not at a clear address. This could be in a park, rural area, footpath, car park, fitness trail, beach, or even a large site like a gym complex or industrial estate.

That’s where what3words comes in.

What is what3words?

What3words is a free app that divides the entire world into 3m x 3m squares. Each square has a unique combination of three words, known as a 3-word address.

For example, instead of trying to describe a vague location like “near the back of the park by the trees”, you can give the emergency services three precise words that take them to the exact spot.

Why is it so important?

In an emergency situation, time is critical. Confusion over location can delay help when seconds or minutes matter.

What3words can be used:

  • When you don’t know the full address
  • When you’re in a remote or rural area
  • When landmarks are unclear or misleading
  • When the phone signal is poor, but the GPS still works

Many UK emergency services now recognise and use what3words.

Who should have it?

Honestly? Everyone.

But it’s advantageous for:

  • Fitness professionals and outdoor instructors
  • Therapists working from clinics, studios, or home settings
  • Businesses with large or complex premises
  • Dog walkers, runners, cyclists, and hikers
  • Anyone travelling or spending time outdoors

If you ever need to call for help, being able to give your exact location could make all the difference.

How to use it

  • Download the free what3words app
  • Open it and allow location access
  • Your current 3-word address will be displayed
  • You can share it directly with emergency services

It’s quick, simple, and works anywhere in the world.

A simple step that could save a life

As first aid trainers, we often focus on what to do in an emergency. But knowing where you are is just as important.

Make sure you have the what3words app on your phone. Encourage staff, clients, friends, and family to do the same.

It’s a small action that could have a huge impact.
