Is Your First Aid Kit In Date?

When was the last time you checked your first aid kit?

For many of us, first aid kits sit quietly in cupboards, cars, gyms, salons, and workplaces, only thought about when something goes wrong. The problem is that first aid equipment doesn’t last forever, and an out-of-date kit can be just as risky as having no kit at all.

Why Expiry Dates Matter

Items in a first aid kit are designed to be sterile, effective, and safe. Over time, materials degrade, packaging can weaken, and products may no longer perform as intended.

Using out-of-date items can lead to:

  • Reduced effectiveness (for example, dressings that don’t absorb properly)
  • Increased risk of infection from compromised sterility
  • Delays in treatment when an item fails at the point of need

In an emergency, you want your kit to work immediately and correctly.

Common items that expire

Some people are surprised by how many first aid items have expiry dates. Common examples include:

  • Sterile dressings and bandages
  • Adhesive plasters
  • Wound wipes and antiseptic solutions
  • Burn dressings and gels
  • Eye wash pods
  • Resuscitation face shields

Even if the packaging looks fine, expiry dates should always be checked.

How often should you check your kit?

A good rule of thumb is:

  • Home kits: Check every 6–12 months
  • Workplace, gym, or treatment room kits: Check weekly/monthly
  • Vehicle kits: Check at least twice a year and after extreme temperatures

You should also check your kit after it’s been used, even for something minor.

Signs your kit needs attention

Your first aid kit may need replacing or restocking if:

  • Items are out of date
  • Packaging is damaged, torn, or discoloured
  • Liquids have leaked or dried out
  • Supplies have been used and not replaced
  • The kit no longer meets current workplace or activity needs

Don’t forget legal and professional responsibilities

For businesses, gyms, therapists, and treatment rooms, maintaining an up-to-date first aid kit isn’t just good practice; it’s part of your duty of care. An out-of-date kit could leave you vulnerable if an incident occurs.
